Cleaning Instructions for Roller Shades
At Elevated Windows PDX, we recommend following these instructions to keep your shades looking great and performing well over time. Depending on the material of your shades—whether a mix of PVC and polyester or 100% polyester—the cleaning methods may differ slightly.
1. Regular Cleaning for All Shades (PVC/Polyester Mix and 100% Polyester)
To keep your shades in top condition, regular light cleaning is essential. Here’s how:
Dusting: Use a feather duster, microfiber cloth, or the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust. Run the duster or brush along the surface of the shades, ensuring you clean both the front and back.
Avoid Excessive Force: Always be gentle when cleaning, as aggressive scrubbing may damage the fabric or cause wrinkles.
2. Spot Cleaning for Stains (For Both Materials)
In the event of minor stains or spills, follow these steps:
Mild Soap Solution: Prepare a mixture of lukewarm water and mild soap (such as dish soap). Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the fabric or cause discoloration.
Dampen Cloth: Dampen a soft cloth or sponge in the soap solution and gently blot the stained area. Do not rub the fabric vigorously.
Rinse: After cleaning, take a separate damp cloth and wipe the area to remove any soap residue.
Drying: Allow the shades to air-dry completely before retracting or adjusting. Avoid exposing them to direct heat sources such as hairdryers, as this can cause shrinkage or damage.
3. Deep Cleaning for PVC/Polyester Mix Shades
For shades that have a mix of PVC and polyester, you can take extra care by following these deep-cleaning steps:
Wipe Down with Damp Cloth: Using a clean, damp microfiber cloth, wipe down the shades to remove built-up grime. You can use the same mild soap solution as above for more stubborn dirt.
Avoid Soaking: Do not immerse the shades in water or expose them to excessive moisture, as it can damage the polyester components.
Quick Dry: Once cleaned, blot any excess moisture with a dry cloth and allow the shades to air-dry before using them again.
4. Deep Cleaning for 100% Polyester Shades
Since 100% polyester shades are more fabric-like, they require a more delicate approach:
Spot Clean Only: Avoid soaking or using excessive water on polyester shades. Blot spots with a mild soap solution and a damp cloth, as mentioned above.
Steaming (Optional): For wrinkles or creases, you can use a handheld steamer at a low setting. Make sure to hold the steamer at a distance to prevent water spots or damage to the fabric.
Drying: Let the shades air-dry fully after spot cleaning.
5. Motorized Shades
For motorized shades, ensure the mechanisms are kept free of dust and dirt. Wipe the casing and control areas gently with a damp cloth and avoid using cleaning solutions near the motor. Regularly check the batteries and ensure the motorized components are functioning smoothly.
6. General Care Tips
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or abrasive chemicals, as these can damage the fabric and mechanisms.
No Machine Washing: Do not attempt to machine wash or dry-clean your shades.
Sunlight Exposure: While many shades are designed to withstand sunlight, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading over time. Use your shades in a manner that minimizes unnecessary exposure when not in use.
7. Professional Cleaning
If your shades accumulate heavy dirt or stains over time, or if you are unsure of the best cleaning method, you may want to consider hiring a professional cleaning service that specializes in window treatments.
By following these care instructions, you can prolong the lifespan of your window shades and maintain their appearance and functionality for years to come. If you have any further questions about how to care for your shades, feel free to contact Elevated Windows PDX for more detailed advice.
